Smoke Shoppe locks up

After nearly five years in business, The Smoke Shoppe in Mountain View has closed its doors.

The reason? “Unforeseen circumstances,” according to a sign taped to the padlocked front entrance Feb. 8.

Offering everything from cigarettes to rolling papers to check cashing services, the business was one of a dozen tobacco retailers dotting a mile-long stretch of road through the middle of Mountain View. Now The Smoke Shoppe plans to reopen in Muldoon under a different name, according to the sign on its door.

The retailer is part of a wider chain of local shops owned by Smoking Joe’s, Inc., according to state business records. Owner Nan Siddiqui was not immediately available for comment.

The Commercial Drive property itself — a compact building next to the Mountain View Car Wash — is separately owned and remains listed for lease, joining the lonely tribe of vacant storefronts scattered throughout the neighborhood.
