A Mountain View car parade and drive-through event aims to celebrate civic engagement in the weeks leading up to the 2020 general election.

The celebration is set to kick off Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m., beginning with a neighborhood car parade starting at New Hope Baptist Church. At 1 p.m., a drive/walk-through event in the church parking lot offers election information and an opportunity to register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and participate in the 2020 Census. Food and personal protective equipment will also be available for participants, according to event hosts.

It’s organized by the Alaska Poor People’s Campaign, the Alaska Center, Native Movement, Native Peoples Action, and other local community groups.

“Together, we will celebrate democracy and create a tradition of voting through hyper-local civic action,” wrote event hosts.

Neighborhood voter turnout is historically low: Fewer than 5 percent of registered Mountain View voters cast a ballot in the August primary election.
