Police investigate morning homicide

A man was killed Thursday morning in an apartment at the corner of Mountain View Drive and N. Park Street.

Sosaia Finau, 21, was found shot to death on the kitchen floor of his girlfriend’s apartment, according to the Anchorage Police Department, and two teenagers now face multiple charges of first and second-degree murder and evidence tampering in connection with his death.

Dispatchers received the first report of shots fired around 9 a.m. April 12, according to APD. At 9:29 a.m., police asked people to avoid the area while patrol officers, SWAT and K9 units responded to the call, searching for two male suspects seen fleeing the scene on foot. Within two hours, the suspects had been identified as 19-year-old Mickee Thompson and 18-year-old Robert Smith, police said.

As police combed the streets and alleys surrounding the scene of the shooting Thursday morning, residents were asked to remain inside and call 911 to report “suspicious persons.” Both Thompson and Smith were armed and dangerous, police said.

Charging documents filed in district court April 12 describe the events leading up to the shooting. Smith and Thompson, who was previously in a relationship with Finau’s girlfriend, went to her apartment Thursday morning and found her there with Finau. An argument ensued when she asked Thompson to return her apartment keys; when Finau stepped in to intervene, Thompson and Smith shot him multiple times, she later told APD. At least 20 shell casings were found on the apartment floor.

After the shooting, Thompson and Smith met briefly with Thompson’s mother in the parking lot, then fled, according to court documents. Anyone with information about their whereabouts is asked to call 911, police said.
