Three people were hospitalized following an apartment fire on North Lane Street Thursday afternoon.
Dispatchers began receiving 911 calls about the blaze around 2:21 p.m. Sept. 20, and the first crews arrived within four minutes, according to Anchorage Fire Department Assistant Chief Erich Scheunemann. They found fire alarms blaring and smoke billowing from the apartment building next to Louie G. Mizelle Park. Residents evacuated. A fire burned in an apartment on the second floor, Scheunemann said. More than a dozen fire engines and other apparatus arrived to fight the blaze, and firefighters brought it under control by 2:39 p.m. Police blocked the intersection of North Lane Street and Mountain View Drive while fire crews worked.
The Red Cross came to assist displaced residents, and three residents were taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment, according to AFD. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Scheunemann said.
Update: One of the people hospitalized Thursday has died, according to a report from KTVA 11 News.
