In October, the Food Bank of Alaska’s monthly food distributions at the Hispanic Cultural Center came to an end.

The site had been well used: Volunteers with the Latino Lions Club served anywhere from 400-600 people on the third Saturday of every month, said Indianna Turkisher, the food bank’s SNAP outreach manager.

“Losing this distribution site means that these individuals are going to have to go to other distribution sites in the Anchorage area,” Turkisher told attendees at the Mountain View Community Council’s October meeting. “We’re really worried, especially going into the holiday season, about how we’re going to continue distributing 400 to 600 meals to individuals and still have it be accessible to everyone who doesn’t have a car.”

Now the food bank is searching for another place to distribute food assistance in Mountain View — one with volunteer support and full accessibility, said Food Programs Director Shawn Hays. In the interim, she said, the food bank is directing people to other neighborhood food pantries at New Hope Baptist Church and Sonrise Community Church.
