The annual Mountain View neighborhood cleanup is set to kick off April 30 in a new location: a semi-vacant lot at the east end of Commercial Drive.

The volunteer effort has faced a few challenges. A billowing state budget deficit means there’s not nearly as much grant money to organize the cleanup this year, according to Mountain View Community Council reports. Ongoing development means there are increasingly few places to host it. But the cleanup goes on.

It’s set to take place through May 7. The drop-off lot at 3213 Commercial Dr. will be open to Mountain View residents every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to cleanup volunteer Niki Burrows. For those who are unable to bring their large items to the lot, a curbside pickup is planned for May 4-6, and residents who’d like to participate should place their trash at their curb or in their alley May 3, Burrows said.

The neighborhood needs the spring cleaning. Around Mountain View, refuse is piling up in alleys and overflowing from dumpsters. Broken couches and old mattresses and worn appliances lean against side sheds and back fences. In years past, the weeklong cleanup has removed more than 100 tons of trash from the neighborhood.

But the effort wouldn’t take place without volunteers, and volunteers are in short supply, Burrows said. The cleanup is still looking for some.
